France emerges as the favourite, with rivals close behind
Before the FIFA World Cup kicked off, Spain and England were widely regarded as the tournament favourites. As the competition has progressed, however, France has emerged as the frontrunner. A major reason for this shift has been the outstanding form of Kylian Mbappé, who is locked in a neck-and-neck race for the Golden Boot with the legendary Lionel Messi. Both players have scored eight goals in six matches.
The battle is about more than just goals – it is also a clash of generations. Messi represents one of the defining icons of modern football, the original great (“OG”), while Mbappé has become the standard-bearer of the next generation, steadily taking over the spotlight on football’s biggest stage. France’s attacking strength is further underlined by the fact that Ousmane Dembélé currently sits sixth in the Golden Boot rankings, reinforcing the view that France is not only delivering results but also boasts one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacks.

England, however, should not be overlooked. They also have two Golden Boot contenders, with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham both scoring six goals so far. With two matches still to play, they have every opportunity to close the two-goal gap.
As the number of remaining nations has fallen below eleven, the number of components in the index has also narrowed. With only the decisive matches left to be played, it is no surprise that several countries now carry very similar weights. While France holds a clear lead, the market assigns almost identical probabilities to Spain, Argentina and England. One thing is certain: the coming week promises plenty of excitement.
VIG Equal Weight Portfolio and VIG Football World Cup Index
(Year-To-Date Performance)

The hypothetic VIG Football World Cup Equity Portfolio Index and the theoretical VIG Starting LineUp Equal Weight Portfolio continue to perform well, although diversification within the index has declined. The remaining countries are all developed European economies, with Argentina as the only exception. As a result, the index’s exposure now closely resembles that of a developed European equity index, complemented by a touch of South American exposure.
In contrast, the VIG Starting LineUp Equal Weight Portfolio continues to consist of its full starting eleven, providing global diversification across regions and asset classes. In addition to equities, the portfolio also includes fixed income and commodity exposure.
The composition of the VIG Football World Cup Equity Portfolio Index has changed significantly as the tournament has progressed. As the field of competing nations has narrowed, the index has become increasingly concentrated. By the end of the tournament, the index will effectively resemble the equity market of a single country. At present, France accounts for the largest weight by a considerable margin, while Spain, Argentina and England remain closely grouped behind it.
